DEI – Black History Month

Join the VGM DEI Committee, either virtually or in person, on Wednesday, Feb. 8, for a special guest speaker presentation.

Who: Gwenne Berry, chief diversity officer, University of Northern Iowa

What: Gwenne will speak about Black History Month education, DEI efforts in the community, and cultivating a culture of inclusion

About Gwenne Berry

Gwenne (Culpepper) Berry is a Waterloo native who attended Spelman College and Iowa State University (ISU) for undergrad. She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism and English from ISU, and a master’s degree in organizational communication from the University of Northern Iowa (UNI). She worked for the local newspaper before accepting a position at UNI in what was then called the Office of Public Relations. She was working as Manager of News and Editorial Services when she interviewed to become Associate Director for Compliance and Equity Management. In that position, she was the primary investigator for complaints related to discrimination, harassment, and sexual assault. In 2016, Gwenne was named the institution’s inaugural chief diversity officer, a position she considers both an honor and privilege to hold. Gwenne serves as vice chair for the Waterloo Municipal Airport Commission; is a founding a member the Waterloo Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.; a member of Club Les Dames; and a founding member of 24/7 Black Leadership Advancement Consortium (BLAC). In her spare time, she enjoys reading, writing, baking, playing tennis, and working jigsaw puzzles.
